Overview
The staff of the Department of Classical Hungarian Literature research the period from the formation of the Hungarian literary institutional system up to the beginnings of so-called literary modernity. This period broadly overlaps with the literary life of the 18th and 19th centuries. Accordingly, the literature of the Hungarian Enlightenment and Romanticism, as well as related movements, literary historiography, and associated arts, are at the center of the department’s scholarly activity. In addition to their academic work, several members of the department are also recognized figures in cultural life.
The department’s educational activities span all levels of the Institute’s programs. In the undergraduate and undivided teacher training programs, lectures and seminars on Classical Hungarian Literature form a key part of the curriculum. The department oversees the Classical Hungarian Literature specialization within the Institute’s master’s programs (Literature and Cultural Studies, Hungarian Language and Literature). It is also involved in several programs of the Doctoral School of Literary Studies: the “Hungarian and European Enlightenment” program is led by Márton Szilágyi; the “Romanticism and Early Modern Hungarian Literature” program is led by Gábor Vaderna.
Faculty members of the department regularly give presentations at national and international academic conferences. A list of major publications associated with the department (dating back to 2010) is currently being uploaded.
