Overview
The department's research and teaching activities are centered around Hungarian literary modernity. Among the main areas of interest are the final decades of the 19th century, the Nyugat journal and the literary trends associated with or running parallel to it, as well as Hungarian literature and literary historiography in the second half of the 20th century. In addition, the scholarly study of contemporary Hungarian literature is also a key focus.
The department contributes to all levels of the divided (BA/MA) degree structure as well as to the undivided teacher training program. It oversees the Modern Hungarian Literature specialization within both MA programs offered by the Institute (Hungarian Language and Literature, and Literature and Cultural Studies). Within the Doctoral School of Literary Studies, two doctoral programs are affiliated with the department: the Literary Modernity program, led by Tibor Gintli, and the Hungarian Literature after 1945 program, led by Gábor Schein.
Faculty members of the department are regular speakers at national and international conferences and professional gatherings. In addition to their academic work, several are also active participants in the literary field—as writers, poets, or critics. A list of major publications associated with the department (dating back to 2010) is currently being compiled.
